Breathing clean air is critical to our health and wellbeing, yet we rarely think about air quality until there is a visible issue, like wildfire smoke and heavy pollution. For Connecticut residents, understanding air quality has become increasingly important as we navigate the changes to our environment caused by climate change. Enter PurpleAir monitors – a powerful tool used to keep track of air quality in real time. These air quality sensors are providing communities across the state with real-time, localized air quality data.
The Air Sensor Loan Program
PurpleAir monitors are a brand of air quality sensor that measure fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and report measurements to a publicly viewable map. Data from these monitors are made public at purpleair.com. As a means to empower communities to track localized air quality, DEEP has developed a pilot Air Sensor Loan Program. This loan program provides PurpleAir sensors to community groups, educators, and public institutions interested in monitoring air quality in their communities. Community groups can apply to the loan program using the DEEP PurpleAir Sensor Loan Request Form.

Whether you are an educator looking to teach your students about air quality and environmental science, or an advocacy group looking for data to support public health policy recommendations, these air sensors can provide valuable data to improve Connecticut’s understanding of air quality.
DEEP values transparency and is committed to providing the public with easy access to environmental data. Through the use of PurpleAir sensors, DEEP ensures that communities are able to monitor air quality at the local level. Making this data public and easily accessible will strengthen accountability and help guide decisions that can benefit public health and environmental policy.
